Written in spare staccato prose this is another novel by the author that touches upon the universal themes of love and betrayal tantalizing the reader with its abstract presentation Fleeting ephemeral and finely nuanced are the feelings that this novel evokes almost as if it were a painting rendered by an artist of the impressionist periodWhen twice married Sydney who by the age of twenty nine finds herself divorced from her first husband and widowed by her second she is somewhat adrift in life Taking a summer job as tutor to Julie Edwards the beautiful but less than intellectually gifted teenager of a well to do family she spends her days in the family s New Hampshire beach front homeThere she meets Jeff and Ben Julie s older brothers and Sydney finds herself drawn into the Edwards family life with all of its underlying tensions When her heart is captured by one of those brothers she is unaware of the smoldering rivalries that exist between the two Conseuently Sydney finds her all too brief happiness shattered in ways that she could never have imaginedThis was an enjoyable book due in large part to the artistry of the author s writing The weakness however lies in the character of Sydney who is the linchpin for the book Somehow she is not a particularly compelling character So when she gets the shock of her life the reader will not be all that sympathetic towards herNonetheless fans of the author will still enjoy this book simply because of the beauty of the spare prose that paints an indelible picture of a family that seemingly has everything but for whom there exists definite and deep cracks in their veneer of happiness

First I think the novel is suited to a person who is probably under the age of 50 It s a series of conflicts that result in love affairs some with people and some with placesIt s a difficult story to get into because it is so conflicted If you are a mature reader however it is easy to eventually guess what is going on and the inevitable outcomeI was chagrined to find an author that I ordinarily like getting sucked into the need to include a same sex love affair of a teen Was this to attract readers than likely I guess this was like putting a cuss word in a Disney film so that the rating is one for a wider audience It was crazy to think a retarded or slow girl of 18 would be allowed by her parents to go to another country for such an affairNot one of the author s best stories

This was an okay beach read I enjoyed the setting and the basic storyline but I didn t really feel any connection to Sydney the main character She s someone who has faced loss and is trying to move on I guess but that s all we get She doesn t have any likes any passions other than she likes body surfing but not even that much she pretty much just mopes around a lotI wish the entire book focused on the first summer at the house instead of just the first 13 I think that would have made for a better story and I think we needed detail time of an experience We need to get to know the characters This book is actually very short because there are not many words on a page It needs to be and could easily be longerThe present tense and very short sections with lots of line breaks works on some levels but would be better for a short story than a novel It s hard to deal with it for a whole novelThis book was okay but had so much unfulfilled potential
