First I received this book as a giveaway and will state I read and ARCI am not a huge fan of this book Even though this book is for small children the rhyming is a bit rudimentary and isn t enjoyable to read and unlike other books for this age group that consists of easy rhyming something about this book just isn t fluid while reading silently or aloud The book is based upon the uestion of what to do if Santa is coming and you don t have a chimney This is a uestion that many small children ask and I was intrigued to find out this author s reply Unfortunately the uestion is never really answered Ben asks his dad dog friend teacher and the mailman and they all provide him with possibilities but the one person who can really answer the uestion Santa never really answers Ben is not happy with all of the answers he gets so he decides to write to Santa Santa s reply reminds me very much of the type of answer that an annoyed parent who has been asked the same uestion too many times would respond with Santa chooses not to answer the uestion and instead gives Ben a lesson on the true meaning of Christmas which was never brought up anywhere else in the book and then says don t worry about the chimney How very frustrating for both the reader and the listener I did appreciate the hidden or not so hidden elf in each picture my 2 year old son pointed him out right away

As per guidelines please note that I received my copy of this book free via the Goodreads giveaway program In the tradition of Mercer Mayer s Little Critter series of picture books illustrator Kate Lampe has hidden a tiny elf named Checkermint on nearly every page of But What If There s No Chimney adding a seek and find game to Emily Weisner Thompson and Mandy Hussey s story of holiday hope and cheer Checkermint can be spotted on every page except the closeups of Ben s letter to Santa Claus and Santa s written response and the level of difficulty in locating the little elf is just right for pre readers and beginning readers As Ben worries what kind of Christmas he ll have this year Checkermint is always close by a subtle indicator to us that Santa Claus has things under control By the end of the story Ben will believe it too When Ben s father lands a new job the two of them move into a house with a huge yard but that isn t foremost on Ben s mind The house has no chimney so how will Santa Claus gain access to deliver gifts on December 25 Ben s father his friend Holly from school his teacher and an affable mailman try to assuage his fears by reminding him that Santa is a magical being and not restricted by the physical limitations that govern the rest of us but Ben isn t prepared to enter Christmas with uncertainty hanging over his head He drafts a letter and sends it to the big man in Santa Claus Indiana hoping to receive affirmation that St Nicholas will indeed stop by Ben s home even though he doesn t have a chimney Will Santa s reassurance that his benevolent magic cannot be stymied restore Ben s confidence in the miracle of Christmas The rhyming text doesn t always flow smoothly but that isn t a make or break issue Still I think this book might have been better if it were not a poem It s hard to write a coherent story in which every line rhymes in flawless meter But the book s message that the magic of Christmas can be depended on is laudable a good complement to any family s yuletide traditions We don t have to know the details of how Santa enters a dwelling that has no chimney what s important is that he won t let such trifling obstacles prevent him from making Christmas merry for kids around the world We can rest easy in that certainty My favorite hidden locations for Checkermint are the miniature bed on the bookshelf in Ben s room his spot outside making snow angels as Ben s school bus drives by and in the classroom where he s scribbling a humorous parody of an Einsteinian euation on the whiteboard behind Mrs Hall I like But What If There s No Chimney and was on the fence about rounding my one and a half star rating up or down It could have gone either way There s a practically inexhaustible supply of Christmas picture books out there but this one does its part to celebrate the season in a fun way

In But What If There s No Chimney a young boy is concerned about how Santa will get into his new house when there s no chimney His dad assures him that it will be alright Santa is magic Ben is not convinced He frets over it at school and then decides to write Santa a letter Santa s response is the same as his dad s He s magicI liked the premise of this story but the execution wasn t as good as I would have hoped The topic concern about Santa is something that applies to older kids ages 4 6 perhaps But the rhyming nature of the book and some of the awkward wording is better suited for younger kids Also the resolution is kind of anticlimactic There is a plug for Santa Claus Indiana as the place where Ben mails his Santa letter and as this book is published by the Indiana University Press it sort of makes sense The description of Santa actually reading the letter that arrived in Indiana could be misleading or confusing for kids beginning to uestion the existence of Santa I may skip the word Indiana when I read this with my 6 year old at Christmas timehttpwwwmomsradiuscom201610kid
