It was nice to find a housekeeping book that was actually used as opposed to guides published to be used by others There were errors in the introduction which should have been corrected but other than that the only way to improve this little book would be to put in copious footnotes to explain things unfamiliar to modern readers eg using milk to clean a floor cloth how ones feeds a coal fire by pressing it down and lots and lots of pictures and diagrams of the floor plan mangles a goose wing for dusting etc Then it would get five stars The Floating Bridge Nettles during the first year of her marriage to James Whatman the noted English papermaker As. This is a thin little book about a very house proud woman We find some fascinating lists of duties for the hard working servants and a good little glossary of old terms I suppose the moral of it all is that a system eg putting paper on your bed top to collect the dust makes life easier all round Personally I would have liked detail and certainly a few old receipts for cleaning The real surprise to me was how carefully Susanna protected her fine fabrics and furniture making sure the blinds were pulled down to a timetable just like the present day National TrustRather poignantly I notice that Susanna s home
